Arulmigu Ramanatha Swamy Temple/Rameswaram


Rameswaram Arulmigu Ramanatha Swami Temple occupies a very important place in our history, as it had strong mythological evidence. This place is situated on Pamban island Separated from peninsular India. Sri Lanka is very near to this place as it is just 50kms from it. This place is connected to Indian mainland by bridge called Pamban Bridge. Co ordinates of this place is 9.2880N 79.3130E.


HOW TO REACH:

      As is an auspicious pilgrim centre Govt of Tamil Nadu takes provides a well routed transport system to Rameswaram. The pamban bridge Over Palk strait is the only means of Road and Railway connection to this place. Earlier this railway line only meter gauge, but in 2007 it converted it into board gauge. This bridge is 2065mts (2.06kms).Like London bridge this bridge also opens in middle for cargo ships and large boats. Tamil Nadu Govt runs regular buses not only to rameswaram but also throughout the Pamban Island.

       LEGEND & HISTORY:

       As per great epic Ramayana, Lord Rama along with his consort Sita and brother Laxmana returned to mainland India. There on advice of sages they conducted prayers to Lord Shiva to get of sins from Brahmana hatya. For offering prayers Lord Rama requested Lord Hanuman to bring a Lingam from Himalayas, as it will take a long to bring Lingam from Himalayas Devi Sita made small Lingam out of clay and offered prayers. It was believed that that small Lingam was installed in the temple and can be seen still today.

     Between 1215 to 1624 CE Jaffna kingdom made considerable contribution towards temple and made this place a part of history. The temples current structure shows the skills of Pandya dynasty. This have the longest corridor among all the Hindu temples. Lord Shiva is preceding deity of this temple and it also considered as one of 12 Jyotirlingas

Around Rameswaram there are about 64 water bodies. Among them 24 were considered important.  14 water bodies among the 24 are in the form of wells. Bathing in these wells was believed to be divine and equal to worshipping.

Many festivals are celebrated here with joy and devotion some of them are Maha Shivaratri, Vasanthostavam, Ramalinga prathishtai, Navaratr festival, Kantha Sasthi.
