Kanaka Durga Temple-Vijayawada



Vijayawada is the cleanest city and the business hub of Andhra Pradesh. It is a beautiful city on the bank of river Krishna. It is also called as The Business  capital of Andhra Pradesh.  It is also a great pilgrim center  for Sri Kanaka Durga devotees. If ever  visit  Vijayawada for any purpose don’t forget to make a visit  to Kanaka Durga  temple.



 LOCATION :


This temple is situated  near the bank of river Krishna. To reach this temple from bus complex is quiet comfortable as there are numerous buses to the bottom of Indra Keeladri  hill and also Devastanam trust of temple provides special buses from bus complex and railway station. It is around 20 km from the airport.


MYTHOLOGY:


  Many  stories are there to describe the Kanaka durga temple , among them one of the story is that warrior prince Arjuna  prayed to Lord Shiva for Pasupathi Astra, here on Indra Keeladri hill and  wins the great war of Mahabharata so it is called  “VIJAY”wada. Another story  used to be that , when a demon called Mahishaasura tortures humankind with his devilish powers, the  Goddesses  Durga devi  killed the Ashura and ended his  wickedness once it for all, and made Indra keeladri  hill as her permanent abode.


People also believe that Lord Indra (king of devatas) used to pray Goddesses  Duraga ,so that hill is named as Indra keeladri.  Vijaywada also known as Bejawada that is because, in those days vijaywada  was not suitable place for living as it was a hilly forest area. Then lord shiva intervened and  mountains and make a way for river krishana so it is called “Bejja”wada.


HIGHLIGHTS :


This temple was beautifully constructed on top of the hill with all the required facilities for devotees. The deity of this temple Sri kanaka Durga is always covered with beautiful  saree and blistering ornaments. Every year many devotees around the world come here on Dasara . people were a special type of dress (Durgamma thalli mala) and be in a different lifestyle like sages and on Dasara they come here and  take a bath in krishna river and complete there rituals  to get back the normal life style. 


The  Vedas says that this temple was swayambhu (self created).  We can find many scriptures of lord shiva  and his Leelas.  This place is a very significant & attractive pilgrim center .



SEVAS  & RITUALS :


From early morning to evening many rituals were conducted . Devotees  can  take a part in it  by paying certain donations to the  devastanam.

1)      Sri.Chakranavavarnarchana nitya seva                               08.30am  -   12.30pm

2)      Lakshakumkumarchana                                                          08.30am    -  13.30 pm

3)      Astotharanamarchana                                                             05.00am   -    09.00pm

4)      Saharsranamarchana                                                                05.00am -  09.00 pm


On the day of Dasara its like a festival of lights,as the whole temple and the hill is decorated with beautiful light settings . on ten days of Dasara  Kanaka Durga  is decorated (Alankaranam) in different styles on each day of Dasara. 1st day  SRI SWARNA KAVACHALAKURTA  DURGADEVI  , 2nd  day SRI BALA TRIPURA SUNDARI DEVI  , 3rd day SRI ANNAPURNA DEVI , 4th  day SRI GAYATRI DEVI  ,5th day SRI LALITHA TRIPURA SUNDARI DEVI , 6th day SRI SARASWATHI DEVI , 7th day  SRI MAHA LAXMI DEVI , 8th SRI DURGA DEVI , 9th MAHISASURAMARDINI DEVI , 10th day SRI RAJARAJESWARI DEVI. These alankarana changes according to the tidhis and  some vedic calculations.

  1. Nice temple. You can drive up the hill or walk to reach the temple in about an hour. Vijaywada is also a thriving spot and attracts plenty of tourists. It is also said that the place owes its name to the fact that Goddess Durga chose to rest here after slaying a demon.
