performed a great penance at the bank of river Godavari. This pleased Rama and
he visit him during in search of Sita.
Bhadra requested Rama to sit on his head as reward, but Rama refused to
do so as he was in search of his sita. So, he promised to fulfill his request
on his return. In the course of fulfillment of the promise Lord Mahavishnu
manifested himself as Vaikunta Rama accompanied by his consort sita on his left
lap and brother Laxmana on his side were placed on head of Bhadra. The deity
was placed on Bhadra’s head Achala (immovable). Thus the place is called as Bhadrachalam.
An
ardent devotee of Rama, Pokaladammakka found this deity in the forest, as she
had a dream of Lord Rama describing of his presence on Bhadragiri hill and told
to perform rituals to attain salvation.
Kancharla
Gopanna also called as Bhakta Ramadas in 1638 AD constructed the temple of
Bhadrachalam. To construct the great temple, he collected money from villagers
for which, he was punished by the Golconda Nawab. Later he was released from Jail as Lord Rama
and Laxmana repaid the total amount he spend on the construction of the temple.
