Suryanarayana Swamy Temple-Arasavalli/Srikakulam






Suryanarayana swamy  (Sun God)  is hindu sun god. An ancient temple of sun god is situated near Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh.  




LOCATION:

This temple is in Srikakulam , you can reach here by all means of transport like train, buses and by air. Coming by train you should get down at Ambadavalasa (Srikakulam road) which is just 13km from Srikakulam. If you are coming by air then it is pretty far from the temple as you have to land in Visakhapatnam which is 106kms from Srikakulam, from here you can book a travels car or you can use RTC buses which are frequently giving services to people. This place is connected by roadways from all major cities like Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad etc.

HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE:

Arasavalli is also called as Harshavalli (abode of joy). It is believed that the temple has been built in 7th century by Kalinga ruler Devendra Varma. Main deity of this temple Suryanarayana Swamy (Sun god) is swayambu. According to the legends King of Devatas  Indra tries to meet Lord Shiva, but Dwarapalaka Nandi  resist his entry as it was an untimely hour when Lord Shiva is along with his wife. This refusal creates aggression in Devendra and leads to fight between him and Nandi. In this fight Devendra was hurt and became unconscious. In his unconscious state, he got a dream that if he install a Sun Idol and offer pooja then he could be relieved from pain and his mistake. After he wake up  remove the sand where he has fallen unconscious and found beautiful Idol of Sun god along with his three consorts Usha, Chaya and Padmini  on a chariot which was drawn by Anura the Radha Saradhi behind them two saints Sanaka and Sanadana holding chatram (Umbrella ).The whole idol is carved on a single granite stone.

Vishwakarma sculptures also called as Maharanas are the architectural engineers who master the wonderful construction of the temple. This temple was build in such a way the twice in a year the sun ray fall on the feet of God.  Though all the five gates are closed, the rays fall on the feet of god for few minutes. 

RITUALS AND SEVAS:

Radhasaptami is main festival of Suryanaryana Swamy. This festival is celebrated on birthday of Suryanarayana(Surya Jayanthi)  which falls on February and March. It was believed that during this period our presence in the temple gives us new energy because the rays which fall on this day considered to be divine. This day is also symbolic change of season from winter to spring. During this day from 5:00AM to 2:00PM devotees are allowed to have a glance of Nijarupa Darshanam of Swamy. Daily sevas are offered to Lord and devotees can also participate by paying small donation to Devastanam.
